Fort Wayne, Indiana.....Femenella Studio......Make sure you watch the video.......and look at the size of the panels.....Art, any other thoughts on working with panels this large?? did you make the curved surface of plywood??
Each trapezoidal section is 11' long, 5' wide at the base and 2' wide at the top. There are three panels in each section. It is a true section of a sphere, meaning, it curves in two directions, both latitudinally and longitudinally. Bending plywood would not work. We used a lightweight casting material to make forms that we waterproofed and used these forms to return the deflected panels back to their original shape. All 60 Pr the panels were severely deflected. The bars on the obverse side of the panels are original. We added three bars to the reverse side of the panels that were custom bent to follow the curvature. We made 1" X1" x1/8" steel bars that followed the longitudinal curvature. These bars were applied to the perimeter of the original steel angle frame to make the system more rigid.
