Harmony: Old and New, on Light and the Gift
Nurturing the Creative Mind

On the Shore of Lake Ontario in Rochester, N.Y.
Conference May 19-21, 2017; Workshops May 17, 18 & 22, 2017

ROCHESTER, N.Y., January 17, 2017 – Worldwide experts in stained glass, architectural art glass and allied fields will share their knowledge and expertise at the American Glass Guild 2017 Conference this spring. This year’s theme, Harmony: Old and New on Light and the Gift, Nurturing the Creative Mind, will take place at the Radisson Rochester Riverside, in downtown Rochester, N.Y. May 19-21, 2017. A diverse selection of pre- and post-conference workshops will be held May 17, 18 and 22.
“Design, technique and process all support the final expression of art, one is not strong without the other,” said Nancy Gong, Conference and Program Chair, member of the AGG Board of Directors, and owner of Gong Glass Works, a Rochester glass studio. “New processes coming from other art fields and technology have opened up the range of artistic capability employed in modern and contemporary glass design and fabrication. This conference will explore the old and new, the use of light, and pushing the limits of creativity and technology while honoring the tradition of stained glass.”
Through keynote presentations, case studies, collections, and discussions, glass artists, historians, curators, critics and other experts will educate, inform and dialog with attendees that hail from across the United States, Canada, Scotland, Switzerland, and Spain.
Topics will be presented in the areas of design, conservation, restoration, process, old and new techniques, studio business and practices, history and new directions. Workshops will cover a wide assortment of hands-on topics: fusing, vitreous painting, lamination, and tonal glass engravings, as well as business practices including Photoshop and photography, public relations, and social media.
The 2017 American Glass Now juried exhibition will debut at the Radisson Rochester Riverside during the conference, then travel to the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.
“Join in the conversations, visit your peers, make new contacts, be inspired, get charged and expand your horizons, with three days or more of total immersion,” said Tony Glander, President of the American Glass Guild. “Our conference city will inspire attendees with the beauty of upstate New York—the home to a wide range of architectural stained and art glass installations—while we learn from notable professionals.”
Additionally, attendees and local residents can sign up for the Rochester Stained and Architectural Art Glass Tour, which will take place on Sunday afternoon, May 21, and feature historic and contemporary glass architectural installations in and around Rochester.
Registration is open to AGG members and the public. Visit for more information.
With an abundance of glacial landscapes, recreation, wineries, and microbreweries, Rochester is well known for its art, music and festivals, along with the Genesee River—one of the few rivers in the world that runs north. Those interested in extending their time in the region can visit Toronto, Niagara Falls, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Finger Lakes region.
