I have a 20"x60" panel with a heavy wooden frame. I need to hang it within an existing modern window space from the interior existing sash header. The frame is really nice and well engineered. I dislike clunky eyelet pairs with cable or chain. You have to rely on eyelet threads to hold the piece up, when the frame maker went to a lot of trouble to make strong joinery. How do the cool people hang panels in existing window spaces? Vic explained a solution once where you drill paths from frame top and back for cable to run into and through the wood frame. I've done that before with small frames, but I thought I'd check to see if there are any other good ways or new hardware available.

you can use heavy duty trolling wire instead of chain. Drill a hole from the top of the stiles to below the jointery. Then drill a larger hole perpendicular. Pull wire through larger hole and tie it off on a nut or washer. Plug whole with a dowel. I've been using Z-bars to hang some very expensive windows. You place one on the wall (sash here) making sure it's level, the other on the frame, and just set it into place. Got it at Home Depot. Comes in various lengths.

Thank you Vic and Mary for the feedback. Z-bar is good stuff. I've used it for mounting a headboard on a bedroom wall. Easy to get correctly level and lots of fastener position options for security. But we won't have a nice vertical surface to mount a z-bar on. Still thinking. Vic's solution is workable. Still have to put some sort of fastener into the existing window top rail.

Josh the frame maker and better carpenter wants to use Zbar, by adding a couple wooden rails to the existing opening. I'm liking it.

by using a Z bracket the entire weight of the window will be hanging from the top rail of the frame. So you might want to reinforce the top rail and stile connections
