2ND pRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, CHICAGO, ILL

Dear Supporter of the St. Paul Preaching at Athens Window Restoration,

Work on the conservation of the St. Paul Preaching at Athens window began in mid-May! This is Friends’ second report to you, our donors who made this restoration possible.

Tom Venturella and Jim Murphy have completed one panel (the top, arched panel containing the Parthenon) and are currently working on the second panel (the panel containing St. Paul).

They report that this “incredible window” is the most complex window they’ve ever encountered and the dirtiest. The window has four and sometimes five layers of glass. The space between these layers has provided an all-too-welcome home for dirt to accumulate over the years. The good news is that the dirt is removable in most cases.

You may remember that this window contains a dozen figures, all of which were incredibly dirty. Some figures are cleaning up really well. Others have suffered damage or repainting over the last century and will require some touch-up. When returned, we will see colors and design elements that have been hidden for decades.

Thank you for your support of this work. We can’t wait to share the re-installed window with you when it returns in mid-2022. The results will be stunning!

Best regards,

Linda P. Miller, President
