I am researching the history of the stained glass windows of First Presbyterian Church Rocky Mount, NC. I am trying to determine who designed and fabricated the windows. Here is what I know.
Church - built 1907-1909
Architect - Herbert Woodley Simpson, New Bern NC
Builder - DJ Rose, Rocky Mount NC
Windows are not signed
The records of the Architect Simpson and Builder DJ Rose have been archived at the NC State Archives. I found a floor plan and interior and exterior photos of the original building, but no records of the stained glass windows.
Herbert Woodley Simpson also designed the Centenary Methodist Church in nearby town of New Bern NC in the same time frame. His co-architect was Charles Granville Jones, from New York City. I mention that in case the architects had ties to glass makers in the New York area. The Centenary Church has not been able to determine who made their windows.
I am including a photo of the main pictorial at First Presbyterian:
The Good Shepherd inspired by the painting of Bernhard Plockhorst
Can anyone identify who designed and fabricated the window? If not, can you tell me who it might be. Who manufactured the glass? Who would have picked the glass and the designs? Would that have been the church or the architect? Someone told me the windows may have been ordered from a catalog. Is that a possibility? Would the pictorial window and additional ornamental windows have been designed and fabricated by the same company? Is there anything of interest that I can include in my historical write-up or that I can research further?
